tumhari zulf ke - madan mohan - rafi - naunihal - kaifi azmi

"Tumhari Zulf Ke Saye Mein" is a soulful masterpiece that brings together four legends of Indian cinema: the haunting melodies of Madan Mohan, the divine vocals of Mohammed Rafi, the poetic depth of Kaifi Azmi, and the natural acting of a young Sanjeev Kumar.

It is from the 1967 film Naunihal, a movie that is perhaps best remembered for its incredible soundtrack and its tribute to Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru.

Song Credits

  • Singer: Mohammed Rafi

  • Music Director: Madan Mohan

  • Lyricist: Kaifi Azmi

  • On Screen: Sanjeev Kumar and Indrani Mukherjee

Interesting Facts

  • Madan Mohan & Rafi: Madan Mohan was known as the "Ghazal King," but he usually preferred Lata Mangeshkar for his compositions. However, for Naunihal, he created this soft, romantic ghazal specifically for Rafi Sahab’s voice.

  • The Lyrics: Kaifi Azmi’s lyrics are deeply philosophical. The line "Nazar jhukai to khaali salaam kar loonga" (If you look away, I will simply offer my greetings) is often cited as a perfect example of dignity in love.

  • A National Tribute: The film Naunihal is famous for its climax, which features the actual funeral footage of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Another iconic song from this film is "Meri Aawaz Suno", which was written as if Nehru himself was speaking to the nation.

  • Sanjeev Kumar’s Early Days: This was one of the early films where audiences noticed Sanjeev Kumar's immense talent. His understated performance in this song, looking at his beloved under the shade of a tree, became a template for subtle romance.
