ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਕਰੀਬ 12 ਵਜ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਸਨ, ਅੱਜ ਬਾਹਰ ਪੈ ਰਹੀ ਕਹਿਰ ਦੀ ਠੰਢ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਲਪੇਟ 'ਚ ਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਬਿਸਤਰੇ 'ਚ ਬੈਠਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਗ਼ੈਰ ਸਰੀਰ 'ਚ ਛਿੜੀ ਕੰਬਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੇ ਇਕ ਛੋਟੇ ਜਿਹੇ ਹੋਟਲ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਕਰਿੰਦਾ ਰਾਜੇਸ਼ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਹੀਟਰ ਲਾਈ ਹੋਟਲ ਦਾ ਮੇਨ ਸ਼ਟਰ ਸੁੱਟੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਯਾਤਰੀ ਦੇ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦਾ ਇੰਤਜ਼ਾਰ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੂੰ ਇੱਥੇ ਪਹੁੰਚਦੀ ਆਖ਼ਰੀ ਐਕਸਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਗੱਡੀ ਦੇ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਤਕ ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਇਸੇ ਹੀਟਰ ਸਹਾਰੇ ਉਡੀਕ ਕਰਨੀ ਸੀ।
ਉਸਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਤੋਂ ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਕਰੀਬ 1 ਵਜੇ ਤੱਕ ਜਾਗਣ ਦੀ ਹਦਾਇਤ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਆਖ਼ਰੀ ਐਕਸਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਗੱਡੀ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਰਦੀ ਸਵਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਹੋਟਲ 'ਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ ਮਿਲ ਸਕੇ ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਕਮਰਾ ਦਾ ਕਿਰਾਇਆ ਬਣ ਸਕੇ। ਪਰ ਅੱਜ ਇਸ ਕਹਿਰ ਦੀ ਸਰਦੀ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਕੁਰਸੀ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਐਕਸਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਵੀ ਹੁਣ ਤਕ ਲੰਘ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਸੀ। ਮੇਜ਼ 'ਤੇ ਪਈਆਂ ਪੁਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰਾਂ ਵੀ ਹੁਣ ਠੰਢੀਆਂ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕੀਆਂ ਸਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਹੱਥ ਵੀ ਲਗਾਉਣਾ ਵੀ ਔਖਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਐਂਟਰੀ ਰਜਿਸਟਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਪਿਛਲੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਐਂਟਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਅੱਜ ਦਿਨੇ ਆਏ ਇਕ ਸ਼ਰਾਬੀ ਜਿਹੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦਿਨ ਦਾ ਚੈਨ ਵੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਖਰਾਬ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਪਾਣੀ, ਕਦੇ ਰੋਟੀ, ਕਦੇ ਚਾਹ, ਕਦੇ ਸਿਗਰਟਾਂ ਆਦਿ ਲਿਆ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਥੱਕ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
