 गना जब-जब कोठरी के अंदर-बाहर जाती, दरवाज़े के पीछे लटकी कठपुतलियां उससे टकरा जातीं... उसे रोकतीं अपनी कजरारी, तीखी, फटी-फटी आंखों से, चमाचम गोटे के लहंगों वाली रानियां, नर्तकियां और अंगरखे-साफे वाले, आंके-बांके, राजा-महाराजा और घोड़े पर सवार सेनापति। ढोलकी वाला विदूषक और सारंगी वाली उसकी साथिन। दीवाना मजनूं और नकाब वाली उसकी लैला। कभी सुगना उदास होती तो इन कठपुतलियों का एक साथ ढेर बनाकर ताक पर रख देती और सांकल लगाकर गुदड़ी पर ढह जाती। कभी गुस्सा होती तो ज़ोर से झिंझोड़ देती सबके धागे।

 नागपंचमी आई। साठे के जिन्दादिल नौजवानों ने रंग-बिरंगे जॉँघिये बनवाये। अखाड़े में ढोल की मर्दाना सदायें गूँजने लगीं। आसपास के पहलवान इकट्ठे हुए और अखाड़े पर तम्बोलियों ने अपनी दुकानें सजायीं क्योंकि आज कुश्ती और दोस्ताना मुकाबले का दिन है। औरतों ने गोबर से अपने आँगन लीपे और गाती-बजाती कटोरों में दूध-चावल लिए नाग पूजने चलीं।

साठे और पाठे दो लगे हुए मौजे थे। दोनों गंगा के किनारे। खेती में ज्यादा मशक्कत नहीं करनी पड़ती थी इसीलिए आपस में फौजदारियॉँ खूब होती थीं। आदिकाल से उनके बीच होड़ चली आती थी। साठेवालों को यह घमण्ड था कि उन्होंने पाठेवालों को कभी सिर न उठाने दिया। उसी तरह पाठेवाले अपने प्रतिद्वंद्वियों को नीचा दिखलाना ही जिन्दगी का सबसे बड़ा काम समझते थे। उनका इतिहास विजयों की कहानियों से भरा हुआ था। पाठे के चरवाहे यह गीत गाते हुए चलते थे:

चील ने फिर से झपट्टा मारा है। ऊपर, आकाश में मण्डरा रही थी जब सहसा, अर्धवृत्त बनाती हुई तेजी से नीचे उतरी और एक ही झपट्टे में, मांस के लोथड़े क़ो पंजों में दबोच कर फिर से वैसा ही अर्द्ववृत्त बनाती हुई ऊपर चली गई। वह कब्रगाह के ऊंचे मुनारे पर जा बैठी है और अपनी पीली चोंच, मांस के लोथडे में बार-बार गाड़ने लगी है।
कब्रगाह के इर्द-गिर्द दूर तक फैले पार्क में हल्की हल्की धुंध फैली है। वायुमण्डल में अनिश्चय सा डोल रहा है। पुरानी कब्रगाह के खंडहर जगह-जगह बिखरे पडे़ हैं। इस धुंधलके में उसका गोल गुंबद और भी ज्यादा वृहदाकार नजर आता है। यह मकबरा किसका है, मैं जानते हुए भी बार-बार भूल जाता हूँ। वातावरण में फैली धुंध के बावजूद, इस गुम्बद का साया घास के पूरे मैदान को ढके हुए है जहाँ मैं बैठा हूँ जिससे वायुमण्डल में सूनापन और भी ज्यादा बढ ग़या है, और मैं और भी ज्यादा अकेला महसूस करने लगा हूँ।
