Na To Karwan Ki Talash Hai - BARSAT KI RAAT (INTEGRAL QAWWALI)

This is often called the "Mother of all Qawwalis." "Na To Karwan Ki Talash Hai" (which transitions into the iconic "Yeh Ishq Ishq Hai") from the 1960 film Barsat Ki Raat is a monumental 12-minute piece of art that remains unsurpassed in Indian cinema.

Song Credits

  • Singers: Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, Sudha Malhotra, and S.D. Batish.

  • Music Director: Roshan (Grandfather of Hrithik Roshan).

  • Lyricist: Sahir Ludhianvi.

  • Starring: Madhubala, Bharat Bhushan, and Shyama.

Fascinating Facts

  • The 12-Minute Marathon: At a time when songs were barely 3 minutes long, Roshan composed this nearly 13-minute sequence. It took almost two weeks just to record and film it.

  • The "Ishq" Philosophy: Sahir Ludhianvi’s lyrics are legendary. He beautifully weaves together Islamic, Hindu, and Sufi imagery—mentioning everything from the Prophet and Mansur to Krishna’s bansuri and Mira’s poison. It defines "Ishq" (Love) as a universal religion beyond borders.

  • Competitive Spirit: The song is a "Muqabla" (competition). In the film, two groups of Qawwals compete in a rainy Lucknow night. The energy in the voices of Rafi and Manna Dey during the high-pitched "Yeh Ishq Ishq Hai" portions is still considered a vocal benchmark.

  • Shah Rukh Khan's Favorite: Modern superstar Shah Rukh Khan has often mentioned in interviews that this is one of his favorite songs and he knows the entire 12-minute lyrics by heart.

  • Recent Revival: In 2024/25, this classic saw a massive surge in popularity among Gen Z after a portion of it was used in the trailer for the film Dhurandhar featuring Ranveer Singh.

Legendary Lines

"Allah-o-Rasool ka farmaan ishq hai, yaani ki har mazaar ka imaan ishq hai" "Aadam ka jism khuld ki pehchaan ishq hai, jazba hai jo kamaal ka armaan ishq hai"
