Since there are many videos based on this story (such as animated versions, recitations, and literary summaries), the general content describes the powerful, heart-warming, and tragic story of a young boy named Hamid.
Here is a description of the story's content:
Story Summary: Idgah (The Prayer Ground)
The story is set during the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr (Eid). All the children in the village are excited to go to the Idgah (the common prayer ground) to offer prayers and spend their holiday money on toys and sweets.
Hamid, a tiny, four-year-old orphan, lives with his elderly grandmother, Amina.
They are extremely poor, and Amina worries about sending Hamid to the fair with only three small coins (3 paise) as his Eidi (gift money). Despite their poverty, Hamid is filled with joy and hope like the other children.
The children go to the fair and, while his friends buy treats, toys, and ride the merry-go-round, Hamid carefully saves his precious coins. He watches his friends spend their money but refuses to be tempted.
As the story progresses, Hamid’s deep love and sense of responsibility toward his grandmother are revealed.
Instead of buying a toy or sweets for himself, Hamid notices his grandmother's hands are often burned while cooking rotis on the iron griddle. He uses his entire three paise to buy a simple, useful object: a pair of tongs (chimta).
When he returns, his friends mock his purchase, comparing the 'tongs' to their fancy toys. But as Hamid eloquently defends his purchase, highlighting its practicality and his devotion to Amina, their childish toys suddenly seem meaningless.
When Hamid presents the tongs to his grandmother, Amina initially scolds him for not eating or buying a toy. However, as she realizes the immense love and selflessness behind his purchase, her anger melts away into overwhelming grief and pride. She cries, embracing him, recognizing the maturity and sacrifice of her young grandson.
Theme: The story is a touching portrayal of child-like innocence coexisting with adult-like responsibility, emphasizing love, sacrifice, poverty, and the maturity of a poor child.
