Funny and Fascinating Facts
The making of this film, and the story behind the song's title, is one of Bollywood's most famous pieces of trivia:
1. The Title Was Inspired by a Tragedy
The film's producer was the legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt. Tragically, he passed away suddenly on October 10, 1964, before the movie was completed.
The Shocking Moment: When composer O. P. Nayyar was told about Guru Dutt's death, he rushed to his apartment. Seeing Dutt's famously troubled face finally at peace, Nayyar was reportedly struck by the title of the song he had just composed: "Aap Ke Haseen Rukh Pe Aaj Naya Noor Hai" (There is a new radiance on your beautiful face today). He felt the words were a surreal and haunting commentary on the late director's peaceful countenance in death.
2. Dharmendra Replaced the Legend
Guru Dutt had originally planned to star in and direct the film himself.
After his death, the remaining crew—including writer Abrar Alvi and Guru Dutt's brother Atmaram—were determined to finish the film as a tribute.
Dharmendra stepped in to play the lead role (Jeetendra Gupta), replacing Guru Dutt, and many scenes had to be reshot. The final version is considered an unfinished tragedy of the Guru Dutt team.
3. The Song that Became Two Hits
The original composer chosen for the film was S. D. Burman. He even composed and recorded a tune for the title track "Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi."
However, due to his ill health (he suffered a heart attack), O. P. Nayyar replaced him.
The Funny Twist: S. D. Burman later reused his unused tune from Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi with new lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri, and it became the immensely popular Kishore Kumar song, "Yeh Dil Na Hota Bechara" from the film Jewel Thief (1967)! So, two legendary hit songs owe their creation to this one film!
4. The Song for Two Heroines
The song is famous for its placement in the film: Dharmendra's character is expressing his feelings, but he is in a love triangle. He is seen singing this beautiful romantic number to both Mala Sinha and Tanuja, leaving the audience (and the characters) guessing which of the two sisters he is actually praising!
