चील ने फिर से झपट्टा मारा है। ऊपर, आकाश में मण्डरा रही थी जब सहसा, अर्धवृत्त बनाती हुई तेजी से नीचे उतरी और एक ही झपट्टे में, मांस के लोथड़े क़ो पंजों में दबोच कर फिर से वैसा ही अर्द्ववृत्त बनाती हुई ऊपर चली गई। वह कब्रगाह के ऊंचे मुनारे पर जा बैठी है और अपनी पीली चोंच, मांस के लोथडे में बार-बार गाड़ने लगी है।
कब्रगाह के इर्द-गिर्द दूर तक फैले पार्क में हल्की हल्की धुंध फैली है। वायुमण्डल में अनिश्चय सा डोल रहा है। पुरानी कब्रगाह के खंडहर जगह-जगह बिखरे पडे़ हैं। इस धुंधलके में उसका गोल गुंबद और भी ज्यादा वृहदाकार नजर आता है। यह मकबरा किसका है, मैं जानते हुए भी बार-बार भूल जाता हूँ। वातावरण में फैली धुंध के बावजूद, इस गुम्बद का साया घास के पूरे मैदान को ढके हुए है जहाँ मैं बैठा हूँ जिससे वायुमण्डल में सूनापन और भी ज्यादा बढ ग़या है, और मैं और भी ज्यादा अकेला महसूस करने लगा हूँ।

 मेरी नौका ने स्नान-घाट की टूटी-फूटी सीढ़ियों के समीप लंगर डाला। सूर्यास्त हो चुका था। नाविक नौका के तख्ते पर ही मगरिब (सूर्यास्त) की नमाज अदा करने लगा। प्रत्येक सजदे के पश्चात् उसकी काली छाया सिंदूरी आकाश के नीचे एक चमक के समान खिंच जाती।

 चवन्नी लाल ने अपनी मोटर साईकल स्टाल के साथ रोकी और गद्दी पर बैठे बैठे सुबह के ताज़ा अख़्बारों की सुर्ख़ियों पर नज़र डाली। साईकल रुकते ही स्टाल पर बैठे हुए दोनों मुलाज़िमों ने उसे नमस्ते कही थी। जिस का जवाब चवन्नी लाल ने अपने सर की ख़फ़ीफ़ जुंबिश से दे दिया था। सुर्ख़ियों पर सरसरी नज़र डाल कर चवन्नी लाल ने एक बंधे हुए एक बंडल की तरफ़ हाथ बढ़ाया जो उसे फ़ौरन दे दिया गया। इस के बाद उस ने अपनी बी एस ए मोटर साईकल का इंजन स्टार्ट किया और ये जा वो जा।

 सच कुछ भी हो

पर मन माने तब ना।

वह तो विचार ढूँढे रखता है
अपने आप को बहला कर रखने के लिये।

अपने मुताबिक शब्दों की खुराक से
मन का पेट तो भर जाता है
पर वक़्त की कसौटी पर
ऐसे बहलाव
ऐसे छलावे
खतरनाक ही साबित होते हैं।

पर मन की ये खूबी कि
वह तमाम तरह की खुद ही की
असफलताओं, गलतियों को
यूँ संभालता है कि
जानते हुए भी कि ये सब झूठ है
व्यक्ति उन्हे सच मान बैठता है ....

ओ मेरे देश !

यदि इस घोर विपत्ति काल में मेरे मुँह पर छाले पड़ जाएँ
और मैं कुछ कह न सकूँ तो तू मुझे दंड देना

मेरे गूँगेपन को इतिहास के चौराहों पर धिक्कारना

ओ मेरी मिट्टी
मेरे फेफड़ों में भरी हवाओं
और मुझे सींचने वाले जल
