Plot Summary

The film is told through two parallel storylines: a present-day search for a long-lost friend, and flashbacks to their life-changing college years.

The Present-Day Quest

The story begins with two friends, Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhavan) and Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi), who are summoned by their old college rival, Chatur Ramalingam (Omi Vaidya), a high-achieving conformist. Chatur reminds them of a bet they made ten years ago to see who would be more successful in life. The focus quickly shifts to finding their third friend, the elusive and brilliant Rancho (Aamir Khan), who disappeared immediately after graduation.

The trio embarks on a madcap journey to find Rancho, using the past bet as a catalyst to revisit their college days and the profound impact Rancho had on their lives.

The Flashbacks (College Life)

The flashbacks center on the three friends at the prestigious Imperial College of Engineering (ICE):

  • Rancho (Aamir Khan): The protagonist and a free-spirited genius. He believes in conceptual learning, following his curiosity, and challenging the practice of rote memorization.

  • Farhan (R. Madhavan): Studying engineering only to appease his strict father, while his true passion is wildlife photography.

  • Raju (Sharman Joshi): An insecure, fearful student from a poor family who is paralyzed by the pressure to succeed and lift his family out of poverty.

The three constantly clash with the college director, Dr. Viru "Virus" Sahastrabuddhe (Boman Irani), who is a staunch advocate of competitive, pressure-cooker education. Rancho's unconventional methods—including the iconic moment where he forces the class to define a "machine" in their own words—make him a nemesis to Virus.

Rancho’s philosophy slowly helps his friends overcome their fears:

  • He encourages Farhan to confront his father about his dream of becoming a photographer.

  • He helps Raju overcome his fear of failure, symbolized by a dramatic near-death experience, allowing Raju to find confidence and a job on his own terms.

Rancho also falls in love with Virus's daughter, Pia (Kareena Kapoor Khan), a medical student who admires his revolutionary way of thinking.

The Climax & Resolution

The present-day search culminates in a remote village in Ladakh, where Farhan, Raju, and Pia finally track down the man they knew as Ranchoddas "Rancho" Chanchad.

The Major Twist: The friends discover that the "Rancho" they knew was actually Chhote, a poor servant boy who traded places with the real Ranchoddas Chanchad (the actual rich heir) to get an education. The true Rancho is revealed to be Phunsukh Wangdu, a world-renowned scientist and inventor who has built a school that follows his teaching philosophy.

Chatur, who arrives expecting to mock a failed man, is stunned to realize that the eccentric teacher is the very inventor he came to India to sign a business deal with. Rancho/Phunsukh Wangdu wins the bet, proving that following your passion and striving for excellence is the true path to success, while chasing only success (like Chatur) is meaningless.

The movie is highly regarded for its blend of humor, particularly in the college scenes, and its serious message, which encouraged thousands of young people in India and across the world to challenge societal expectations and pursue their genuine interests.
