Plot Summary
The film is set in a small village in Pakistan in 1979 during the era of military dictator Zia-ul-Haq, with flashbacks to 1947.
Veero/Ayesha (Kirron Kher): The protagonist is a Sikh woman named Veero who was abducted during the violence of the 1947 Partition.
To survive, she was forced to convert to Islam, marry her abductor, and completely bury her past, living a quiet life as Ayesha Khan. She teaches the Quran to local children and is a beloved member of the community. The Conflict: Her peaceful existence is shattered when her son, Saleem, is drawn into the growing Islamic extremist movement that is gaining traction under the new political climate.
The young men in the village are becoming radicalized, rejecting the syncretic culture of their elders. The Past Resurfaces: Simultaneously, a group of Sikhs from India arrives in the village on a pilgrimage, searching for women who went missing during the Partition. This visit threatens to expose Ayesha's secret identity, putting her in an impossible situation: return to a past life that is no longer hers or face the societal changes that are turning her own son against her secular identity.
The Climax: The film powerfully explores the idea of silence—the silence of the women who were victims of the Partition and the forced silence imposed by growing religious fundamentalism.
Key Achievements
Golden Leopard (Best Film): The film won the prestigious Golden Leopard award at the 56th Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland.
Best Actress Award: Kirron Kher won the Best Actress award at the Locarno International Film Festival for her nuanced and powerful portrayal of Veero/Ayesha.
It is indeed considered a profound and important film for its exploration of history, identity, and the fate of women caught in socio-political upheaval.
