Synopsis and Theme
The film primarily revolves around Pooja Malhotra (Shabana Azmi), an orphan who dreams of a secure home and family. Her world shatters when she discovers that her husband, Inder Malhotra (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), an ambitious filmmaker, is having an extramarital affair with a successful actress, Kavita Sanyal (Smita Patil), who has even financed the new apartment he gifted Pooja.
Pooja's Journey: After Inder leaves her for Kavita, Pooja is devastated but chooses to leave the house and her financial dependence to find a new life on her own. The film beautifully chronicles her journey towards self-reliance and identity as she finds a job and moral support from a singer named Raj (Raj Kiran).
The Other Woman: The film also explores the character of Kavita, who struggles with guilt, paranoia, and deepening mental instability (hinted to be schizophrenia) due to the affair.
Climax: In a powerful and unconventional climax for its time, Pooja finds a new purpose in life by caring for her loyal maid's daughter after the maid is jailed. She firmly rejects both Inder when he returns repentant, and Raj when he proposes, choosing to remain independent and defining her own 'meaning' of life outside the confines of marriage.
The movie is a profound exploration of female empowerment, the fragility of relationships, and a woman's search for self-worth independent of a man.
