Life and Career
Early Life: Born in Shanghai, China in 1963, Stephen Pan's artistic journey began at the age of five with lessons from his grandfather, Bo Yin Pan, a renowned calligrapher and poet.
Early Recognition: Despite his deep connection to traditional Chinese art, he developed a passion for the paintings of the Renaissance and French Impressionist periods. By the age of 13, he had already won a series of National Art Excellence awards in China for his oil paintings.
Move to the U.S.: To pursue his artistic career further, he moved to the United States. In 1997, he accepted a teaching position at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco.
Artistic Style and Subjects
Style: Stephen Pan works in the classic European oil painting tradition. His style is characterised by elegance and serenity.
Subject Matter: Since 1987, his work has focused primarily on original figurative oil paintings on canvas, with a notable interest in ballet dancers. He is praised for his mastery of the figure and his skill in using light to create subtle textures and expressions.
