The movie Kohra has some wonderful behind-the-scenes stories, especially since it's an Indian adaptation of a classic English thriller.
Here are a few funny and fascinating facts about the film and its actors:
Facts About the Song "Yeh Nayan Dare Dare"
Upside Down Filming: The iconic song "Yeh Nayan Dare Dare" (the one you asked about) was a very tricky shot!
It was filmed with Biswajeet and Waheeda Rehman sitting in one car, while the cameraman, Marshall Braganza, followed them in a separate running car. Braganza actually shot the scene with the camera mounted upside down to achieve the spectacular visuals of the winding road, which Biswajeet later said still leaves "technowhizs awestruck." Keep a Straight Face: Biswajeet recalled that it was quite challenging for him and Waheeda, as they had to sit very close, not move too much, and look "madly in love" while dealing with the logistics of the moving camera rig.
Facts About the Movie and Actors
The Mystery Woman's True Identity: The entire plot of Kohra revolves around Raja Amit's (Biswajeet) glamorous first wife, Poonam, whose ghost haunts the new wife, Rajeshwari (Waheeda Rehman).
The movie famously never shows Poonam's face, adding to her mystery. For decades, her identity was a secret, only to be revealed by Biswajeet many years later: the role of Poonam was played by a then relatively unknown Anglo-Indian actress named Thelma, who did only small supporting parts. The Problem with Comparisons: Kohra is an adaptation of the famous Daphne du Maurier novel Rebecca.
In the story, the second wife is constantly made to feel inferior and less beautiful than the first. However, many critics found it a fun contradiction that the filmmakers cast the breathtakingly beautiful Waheeda Rehman as the "timid" and "less attractive" second wife, making it impossible to believe that any woman (even a ghost) could be more beautiful than her! The Famous White Room: The famous all-white suite of the deceased first wife, Poonam, which is kept as a shrine by the housekeeper Dai Maa (Lalita Pawar), was an elaborate set built at the Rajkamal Kalamandir studio.
The set was so spectacular and innovative for its time that top Bollywood producers and directors would often visit the studio just to walk around and marvel at the set design. Hemant Kumar's Double Role: Hemant Kumar, the legendary voice behind the famous song, was not just the singer and music director, he was also the producer of the film!
He gave the film its haunting musical score, alongside producing the entire suspense-thriller.
