Michael and Inessa Garmash are a celebrated husband-and-wife painting team, known for their romantic and impressionistic figurative works.
Here are some key aspects of their work and lives:
Collaborative Style: What makes them unique is that they both work on the same canvas, a rarity in the art world.
Their styles blend seamlessly to create a unified vision. Their art is a testament to their personal and professional partnership. Romantic Impressionism: Their paintings are characterized by a soft, ethereal quality, with a focus on capturing mood and emotion.
They use a masterful interplay of light and shadow, and their subjects often have a dreamy, idealized feel. They are known for their ability to convey sensuality and tenderness. Common Themes: Their work often features:
Figurative Subjects: Women and children are frequent subjects, often in graceful and contemplative poses. Their daughter, Polina, has served as a model for many of their pieces.
Idyllic Settings: They paint charming scenes of leisure, often set on beaches, in gardens, or in beautiful, sun-drenched interiors.
Music and Dance: Given Inessa's background in ballet and music, these themes are often incorporated into their work, adding a sense of movement and grace.
Background and Training:
Michael Garmash (born 1969, Lugansk, Ukraine) began painting at a very young age and was an art prodigy.
He was a valedictorian at the Lugansk State Fine Art College and later graduated at the top of his class from the prestigious St. Petersburg Academy of Art. He also has a background in stained glass work. Inessa Garmash (born 1972, Lipetsk, Russia) was a talented artist from an early age, excelling in ballet, music, and gymnastics before pursuing art.
She was recognized as the top undergraduate at the Lugansk State Fine Art School.
Love Story: Their story is famous in the art world.
As a young man, Michael met Inessa and, to win her heart, he spent the night painting her portrait on the walls and roads of her hometown. This act of romantic devotion is a theme that runs through their combined body of work. Their artistic collaboration began years later when Inessa, without telling him, fixed one of Michael's paintings that their daughter had damaged. The "new" work was praised as his best, and he immediately recognized her hand in it, leading to their lifelong partnership in art.
The Garmashes have exhibited their work internationally, and their paintings and limited edition prints are highly sought after by collectors.
